Hereditary Defects of the Australian Shepherd and Health Issues

The Australian Shepherd is a healthy breed compared to many but is not without hereditary problems.

Diseases and conditions currently affecting Aussies include:- CEA/PRA, Hereditary Cataracts, Epilepsy. MRD1, Hip and Elbow Dysplasia, Cobolamine Malabsorption, Pelger Huet Anomoly and a range of Cancers.

Testing is available for all of the above apart from Epilepsy and Cancer.

ASCUK do have a HEALTH DATABASE where results can be added with an owners permission. This is CONFIDENTIAL and is being put together to hopefully help our breed to progress and for future research. If you would like to add your Australian Shepherd's results, you can e-mail them to the webmaster or telephone Jacqui O'Brien the breed health co-ordinator on 01803 762805.

Remember, this is YOUR breed and ALL results can only help with the breeds future.
