Judges Critique

It was an honour and a pleasure to be able to judge the Australian Shepherd Club of the UK’s Open Show at Tollerton. It was an excellent entry including some really good dogs, worthy of any Championship Show. It was great to see that at the same venue the club had also put on a four class limited obedience show, proving that the breed in the UK is capable of doing more than just one thing. It is a versatile breed and this was proved while we waited for the ‘stays’ to finish before completing our show! The weather was kind to us and I was able to judge outside in a good sized ring with very able helpers to ensure that the show ran smoothly. I was thrilled with my final line-up of both dogs and bitches.

Minor Puppy Dog (2)

1 Swallow’s Lyveden Castill Chaska. Well balanced baby who for his age moved so well. Compact with a natural bob and good bone and feet. Attractive head and expression with a good earset & carriage. Good body proportions with a good coat coming. Best Puppy Dog and Reserve Best Puppy In Show

2 Harvey’s Gemthorne Theme For A Dream. Again still very young but moved well on well boned legs and feet. Topline still needs to settle but time with correct this. Lovely head and expression with a good neck and shoulders. Nice coat coming.

Puppy Dog (2,1a)

1 Gemthorne Theme For a Dream.

Junior Dog (1)

1 Richards’ Moortime Once In A Blue Moon. Well coated junior with an excellent masculine head and expression. Good, well set and carried ears and good eye with a strong muzzle. Good neck and shoulders and well boned legs. Good topline and tailset. Moved and showed well, despite being alone in the class.

Yearling Dog (6)

1 Harvey’s Gemthorne Dust Storm. Shy boy who must be persevered with for he is worth it. He is a good make and shape with a masculine head and expression. Balanced body with good bone and feet, lovely coat in excellent condition. When he settled he moved and showed well. Now I see his breeding I can see why he appealed.

2 Dowson’s Ozzypool Running Bear. Full of beans and gave his handler a hard time! Going through the teenage stage and decided he wouldn’t move properly and wouldn’t hold his topline either! But, when you go over him, he is well made with a masculine head and a strong muzzle. Good eye, neck and shoulders. Good bone and feet and nice depth and width of chest with a good loin. Quality young man who won his place in a good class.

3 Moortime Once In A Blue Moon.

Post Graduate Dog (12,3) Excellent class.

1 Keel’s Drcral Majestic Prince. Not an overlarge tri but what a mover. Full of vigour, well muscled and balanced holding a strong topline and moving on well boned legs and feet. I liked his type and his excellent hindquarters. Masculine with a well balanced head and good expression. Well placed eye and ear, good neck and shoulders and a nice coat.

2 Roberts’ Armatan Bolt From The Blue. Merle boy who is a showman.  Masculine head but my preference was for slightly smaller ears. On saying this, he is quality and an excellent mover with a lovely coat, in excellent condition. I liked his neck and shoulders, balance and body proportions and good bone and feet.

3 Dennis’ Armatan Rhinestone Cowboy at Ausden.

Limit Dog (8,3)

1 Spavin & Raymond’s Allmark Ozzy Osbourne at Dialynne. What a class with two of my favourite males vying for the top spot in a class of typical Aussies. 1 is well made, balanced and in proportion. Quality tri with an excellent masculine head and expression. Well placed and shaped eye, strong muzzle, all framed by well set and carried ears. Excellent neck and shoulders, strong topline held on the move and set up. His profile is stunning on the move and his hind movement going away is copybook. Good depth and width of chest with a good loin. Well muscled hindquarters and the whole package comes with an excellent, well presented coat. He is a showdog who was enjoying his day out and fought hard to win the class and take Best Dog and BEST IN SHOW

2 Harris, Allan & Winfrow’s Allmark Solotaire. Litter brother to 1 and another I have admired before as a pup and am pleased with his progress. He has grown into a super typical Aussie. Masculine head and expression with a balanced outline. Very masculine in outlook with a lovely neck and shoulders. Good bone and feet, lovely coat in excellent condition with well muscled hindquarters. Moved and showed well.

3 Dowson & Wiltshire’s Ozzypool Ticket to Ride.

Open Dog (4,1)

1 Morley, Bell & Reeve’s Am/Can/Int'l Ch Touchstone Simply Magic. Another I have admired before and although now 7, he is showing no sign of his age.  Lovely type who is a good showdog. Masculine head and expression with a strong muzzle and a good earset and eye placement. Lovely neck and shoulders, strong topline and tailset. Well ribbed and balanced all through. Moved and showed well to win class, Reserve Best Dog and Best Veteran In Show.

2 Gatenby & Green’s Armatan Adorez Mon Maitre. Tri who moved and showed well. In good coat and condition. Masculine head and expression with a well set ear, lovely neck and shoulders. Strong topline and a well set tail with good body proportions. Liked his bone and feet and well ribbed body.

3 Harvey’s Am Ch Briarbrooks Jack Be Quick.

Veteran Dog (7)

1 Gatenby & Green’s Armatan Take A Chance On Me. Tri not looking his age, he is full of life. Masculine head and expression, lovely body proportions and a good size. Excellent coat beautifully presented. Strong topline with excellent hindquarters and a well made front assembly. Moved and showed well.

2 Simmons, Richards & Harlow’s Drummanor Caomhon for Accra. Typical dog with a good outlook. Moved well on well boned legs and feet. Masculine head and expression, lovely neck and shoulders with a good topline and hindquarters. Lovely coat in excellent condition.

3 Morley & Reeve’s Can Ch Touchstone Dream Come True.

Minor Puppy Bitch (1)

1 Challenger’s Lyveden Castill Chandra. Well trained baby with so much potential. Feminine head and expression with a good eye and ear carriage. Lovely neck and shoulders, nice body balance and a good size and shape. Liked her hindquarters, bone and feet. Nice coat coming and moved well for a baby. Alone, but quality and could win anywhere. Best Puppy Bitch and BEST PUPPY IN SHOW.

Puppy Bitch (2)

1 Pugh’s Triforce The Edge Dancer at Shloyan. Tri who is still a baby and needs to come up on her legs to finish. Moved well on well boned legs and feet. Pretty head and expression, nice coat and condition. Good topline and tailset.

2 Venton’s Liskarn Time To Wish at Mistyisle. Blue Merle who needs to fill in in front to complete the picture. Very feminine in outlook with a pretty head and expression. Moved as a baby should. A good size and shape but just needs time.

Junior Bitch (2)

1 Child & Cartwright’s Moonstyle Magic Minx. Tri who was well presented. I liked her balance and type. Moved and showed well, in lovely coat and condition. Feminine head and expression with a good eye and well set ears. Nice neck and shoulders, good bone and feet. Good topline but tail needs to settle as it spoils her profile on the move.

2 Liskarn Time To Wish at Mistyisle.

Yearling Bitch (5,1)

1 Edwards Tammistar’s Tansy Topaz. Pretty tri at her first show. Good height to length proportions, pretty head and expression. Good neck and shoulders, topline held on the move giving a lovely profile. Good coat and condition, with good hindquarters. Just needs practice to get the best out of her. Keep trying for I think she is worth it.

2 Pugh’s Autumnhaze Abracadabra at Shloyan. Balanced bitch whose topline needs to settle on the move. Good coat, nice head, eye and expression. Nice tri of a good size who showed well. Good neck and shoulders and a nice ribcage.

3 Bingham’s Amberslade Bellacoola.

Post Graduate Bitch (6,3)

1 Morley’s Trijem No Hope For The Devil.  Red Tri lacking coat but nothing to hide. Good mover with a lovely front. Pretty head and expression, lovely eye placement and shape. Well set ears, good neck and shoulders. Correct topline with a well set tail. Good depth of chest with well boned legs and feet, lovely profile movement.

2 Blair’s Amberslade Go On Reba. Heavier tri all through but still keeping her femininity. Nicely balanced body under a heavy coat, which can give the impression of being overweight which she is not. Feminine head and expression, with a good topline, good hindquarters and well laid shoulder placement.

3 McFarlane’s Gemthorne White Lighting.

Limit Bitch (5)

1 Turnbull, Clegram & Dowson’s Ozzypool Eternal Flame. R/W, loved her front extension and type. Feminine head and expression with a good eye and ear. Lovely neck and shoulders, good topline held on the move, good rib and a strong loin. Well set tail with a lovely hindquarter. Showed and moved well, lovely coat and condition. Reserve Best Bitch.

2 Spavin & Raymond’s Allmark Cookie Monster at Dialynne. Red Merle showy bitch put down in pristine coat and condition. Lovely type with a pretty head and expression. Good ears which are well set and carried well. Balanced body with a good ribcage and loin. Lovely hindquarters and tailset. Nice size and shape.

3 Storer’s Javison Silver Belle.

Open Bitch (6,2)

1 Rogers’ Ozways First Print at Frebobears. Feminine bitch, there is no mistaking her sex. She moved a dream keeping her topline and head carriage on the move. Looking particularly good in profile on the move, so very feminine in head & expression. Well balanced with an excellent neck and shoulders. Good hindquarters and hocks, in excellent coat and condition. Well muscled and showed well to win class, Best Bitch & Reserve Best In Show.

2 Gatenby & Green’s Armatan Moonchild. Another put down in excellent coat and condition. Balanced bitch of quality, a good size and shape. Feminine head and expression, again a good neck and shoulders. Lovely ribcage and loin, strong hindquarters, good bone and feet.

3 Morley’s Touchstone Lovely Rita Oakhill (Imp USA).

Veteran Bitch (2,1)

1 Haddock’s Gibbands Red Cherry. Red Merle typical bitch who has obviously been enjoying her meals a bit too much! She has a good coat in lovely condition, feminine head and expression. Good eye and well set ear of a good size. Alone but a lovely type who in her youth won well.

Black/Black Tri (8,1)

1 Allmark Solotaire

2 Tammistar Tansy Topaz

3 Ozzypool Running Bear.

Red/Red Tri (9,4)

1 Dowson’s Ozzypool Red Hogan. Good make and shape, a balanced dog of a lovely type. Good topline and tailset. Excellent hindquarters and a masculine head and expression. At 8 doesn’t look his age nor behave it either.

2 Harris’ Allmark Ginger Nuts. Well coated dog who showed and moved well. Masculine head and expression. Just slightly bum high which held him back in a strong earlier class, but a typical Aussie of a nice type.

3 Armatan Rhinestone Cowboy at Ausden.

Blue Merle (10,3)

1 Liskarn Time To Wish at Mistyisle

2 Javison Silver Belle

3 Gumbley’s Mirriyan Bega Mirrin.

Red Merle (6,1)

1 Ozzypool Ticket To Ride.

2 Can Ch Touchstone Dreams Come True (Imp USA)

3 Blackmore’s Elkstone Lady Bug Red.

1 DrCral Majestic Prince

2 Armatan Bolt From The Blue

3 Am Ch Briarbrooks Jack Be Quick.

Stud Dog (2,1)

1 Morley & Bell’s Casa De Filler for Dreamweaver (Imp Austria). A good dog with his children who all were of a type and a good shape. Obviously producing good looking, typical dogs.

Brood Bitch (1)

1 Dowson’s Allmark Veuve Clicquot at Ozzypool. Again an excellent brood bitch who has produced well. Excellent mover with nice hindquarters, which have been passed on to her progeny.

Junior Handling – 6 to 11 years (1)

1 Nikki Reeve. Alone in class but she is a cracking handler who beautifully handled her charge and followed commands. But, more importantly in the breed she handled well too. She can challenge many an adult with her showmanship and understanding of the breed.

Junior Handling - 12 to 16 years (3,1)

1 Samantha Reeve and 2 Catrin Roberts. You could put the proverbial ‘fag paper’ between these two handlers. Both showed their charges to advantage and both made the best of their dogs. Both were neatly dressed but not detracting from their dogs. It was a very hard decision and as a breed, you are lucky to have two such handlers to show your dogs, they are excellent. In the run-off the eldest sister just stole a march on her younger sister, but there was no disgrace in losing here. All three handlers followed instructions without any silliness, just making the best of their dogs but at the same time treating their charges with respect. Well done.
